Rome Jewelry Week 2023, Angela Gentile Receives the “I Daverio” Award for Jewelry-Sculpture

Rome Jewelry Week 2023 took place from October 6 to 15, the third edition of the event dedicated to contemporary jewelry. Numerous jewelry designers, goldsmith ateliers, students and professors from academies and design schools participated. For the first time, the “I Daverio” award was also presented, created by the brand Daverio1933, the event sponsors, and dedicated to jewelry-sculpture.

The “I Daverio” Award to Goldsmith Artist Angela Gentile
The recognition awarded by Luca Daverio was created to celebrate jewelry-sculptures, a true tradition of the Daverio family, begun by father Franco in 1933 and continued from the 1980s by his son Luca. The “I Daverio” award, which debuted this year at Rome Jewelry Week 2023, aims to promote the excellence of designers who choose jewelry-sculpture to express their artistic creativity.
The award went to designer Angela Gentile and her brooch-necklace with the evocative name: “BOOM! Explosion of light”. The jewelry was created in raw silver, with black diamond and synthetic diamonds, semi-rough quartz, silver filings, epoxy resin and recovered volcanic rock fragments. These fragments, the artist wrote in the synopsis presenting her work, represent “traces of the primordial past, memories of cosmic explosions and terrible beauty. ‘We are made of the same matter as the stars,’ we carry within us the imprints of Creation and continuously break down, fragment and rebuild in perpetual motion and new life”.
Angela Gentile is a goldsmith artist who began creating jewelry in 1987, using precious metals and classic techniques such as piercing and embossing. In her artistic journey, she then began to also use natural elements and different and “humble” materials in her creations.

The Art of the Daverios Featured at Rome Jewelry Week 2023
Among the most followed and appreciated events of Rome Jewelry Week 2023, the conference held by Luca Daverio at Palazzo Valentini, titled “The art of the Daverios, from Franco Daverio to today”.
The designer spoke first about the creative process: “Perfect things are cold: the ocean without waves is cold, it’s the waves that animate it. Human imperfections characterize us and I hope that algorithms will never overcome our soul. I like to engrave my marks, sometimes I move by a trifle, but I keep moving until I feel there’s a harmony that satisfies me and only then do we move to 3D design. It’s not the hand connected to what you do, but it’s the soul”.
Luca Daverio then recalled the family tradition, which stems from sculpture: “We didn’t start as goldsmiths: my father was a sculptor, painter and graphic artist. The starting point matters a lot, because it’s a different way of operating. For us the union between art and jewelry is always present and we materialize it in a plastic way: before being goldsmiths we are visionaries, we like manual work, experimenting with materials, understanding how to make an object”.
“For me, jewelry is not a container of preciousness, but of emotions – Daverio continued. – It’s a sculpture, a miniature work of art, but it has something that sculpture doesn’t have: it’s art that is worn. Creating personalized jewelry is like creating a tailored garment, you have to think about who will wear it: the person must feel in harmony with this object that has a soul and that addresses another soul. We don’t create jewelry for marketing, but for passion”.
