THE EMERALD, PRECIOUS STONE OF THE MONTH OF MAY

The emerald is the gemstone of the month of May, a stone with millennial charm that a civilization devoted to beauty like that of Ancient Egypt discovered and used as an ornamental stone, for jewelry and for architectural decorations.

The Egyptians believed it also had magical powers that through purifying rituals could heal from diseases and represented immortality, reincarnation and fertility.
It was also believed that if placed under the tongue, it could help predict the future and improve memory and expressive ability. The emeralds came from mines within Egypt still known today as Cleopatra’s mines and which would be exploited for many centuries also by Greeks and Romans.
Today these mines are exhausted, but Egyptian emeralds would not meet the standards of the modern jewelry market. They were stones of poor quality to obtain stones worthy of the beauty that we find today in Colombian or African ones.
It was around 1500 that the conquistadors discovered the Colombian mines of Muzo and Chivor, plundering the land and the South American people to bring the gems to India where to this day most of the rough minerals destined to be cut for the jewelry industry are entrusted.
The cut that is almost always performed to best enhance the emerald is the rectangular stepped cut called precisely “emerald cut”
Today emeralds from Zambia also exhibit the intense color and the most characteristic and precious tone of this gem.
