The Diamond, April’s Birthstone

We bring to light April’s birthstone, the diamond. It is composed of pure carbon, the most resistant and hardest natural material, 140 times harder than sapphire and ruby which follow it on the Mohs hardness scale in ninth position.
It is also one of the rarest minerals in the world. Consider that from 1,000 kg of diamond-bearing rock extracted from a mine, only 0.10 grams of diamond are obtained, and of these only 20% is of gem quality, meaning it possesses extremely rare purity qualities to be cut as a gemstone.

Composed of pure carbon, this extremely rare mineral can only surface thanks to ancient extinct volcanic chimneys which, following millions of years of erosion caused by rain and wind, reveal this extraordinary marvel of nature.
Thanks to recent research, it has been discovered that a high concentration of diamonds is found in the oceans where man has already ventured in search of gems. De Beers Marine has decided to invest in recovering stones from the oceans, but some observers consider it as difficult “as finding 1 kilo of sugar randomly scattered across two football fields and then trying to recover it with a vacuum cleaner during a moonless night”…in short, not a simple undertaking.

Using underwater robot-vacuums, designed to operate 20 hours a day and sift through 50 tons of material per hour, and despite the high presence of diamonds in the oceans, today the most profitable mines remain on land. Countries like Namibia, Canada, and Botswana are currently the largest producers.
In the fascinating world of precious stones, gems are minerals with characteristics of luster, brilliance, transparency, and color that, due to their extreme rarity and beauty, are considered of great economic value.
