Amethyst, February’s Gemstone

The name “amethyst” derives from the Greek amethystos, meaning “remedy against drunkenness,” a benefit long attributed to the stone. Due to its wine-like color, ancient Greek mythology associated the gem with Bacchus, god of wine. It was also believed to keep those who wore it clear and sharp both in battle and in business.

In crystal therapy it is used as a calming agent, to restore mental balance in states of agitation, tension and stress.
It stimulates a higher vision of one’s emotions and feelings, promotes relaxation, imagination, artistic creativity and practice in spirituality.
It is strongly reharmonizing and rebalancing. It acts at very deep levels of being, helping us on our evolutionary path.
Bearer of universal love, balance and justice, amethyst is the gem of those who wish to cultivate the mystical aspect of life.
According to these practices, amethyst teaches humility, helps us free ourselves from self-pride to open the threshold to the realm of knowledge and wisdom.
It is called “the stone of the soul” and guides toward introspection.
According to Eastern culture, the violet ray that corresponds to the musical note B has a vibrational entry into the 7th chakra (crown of the head and pineal gland) where the thought of purity, concentration, rationality, knowledge and connection with the entire universe develops.
With the emanation of amethyst one learns to see with the eyes of the intuitive mind, receiving the impulse of how and when to move or stop in waiting.
The suffering that it can cause in the “awakening” of the consciousness of the Self, in seeing oneself for what one is, has given this crystal the heavy reputation of being a sad and negative stone, but its action leads to an equally positive end: knowing oneself.
Amethyst draws consciousness away from self-centered thoughts, attracting the mind toward a deeper understanding.
Until the 19th century, Russia was the main source for amethyst extraction, subsequently large deposits were also found in Brazil, Africa and South America. Brazil is still an important producer particularly thanks to the Rio Grande do Sul region, although the raw amethyst extracted tends to have a lighter color compared to amethyst found in other countries.
Amethyst is the stone that is usually given for the sixth wedding anniversary.
